The Art of Doumbek

In this class we will learn there art of the doumbek. I will teach this class in such a way that both the first timer student and more advanced students will be able to gain new skills. I am teaching in the form that was introduced to me from acclaimed doumbekist Marty Ellen Donald who teachers in an open rhythm, semi-closed, and closed rhythm format. We will go over several common rhythms and add more complex rhythms as the class progresses. Everyone is welcome.
Students are asked to bring their own drum.

Lauren Checchio is an acclaimed world percussionist, bringing audiences to there feet with her passionate, graceful, and joyful performances. Lauren often surprises audiences world wide with her knowledge and virtuosity of middle eastern and Indian-drumming. They cannot believe that she is a girl from NY. A classically trained cellists, Lauren discovered hand drums at a show in Manhattan when she was 28. Later she travelled to Israel and discovered there Doumbek. When she returned to there US she met her first tabla teacher, Ty Burhoe, and had a rigorous daily practice under his tutelage for years. In the last few years Lauren has toured nationally with her all women Mistake/Sephasrdie group called Divahn. She is a highly sought after teacher. She has collaborated with Grammy Award winning artists Glen Valez and tabla master Anindo Chaterjee. She is also in demand as an accompanist for dance and recently collaborated with tribal belly dance superstar Sharon Kihara.
